For an Instrument Rating or Commercial Pilot Certificate, a minimum of 50 hours of cross-country time must be obtained prior to the instrument checkride. You may include cross country time gained while obtaining your Private Pilot License. Cross-country is defined, as landing at any airport that is greater than but not equal to 50 nautical miles. You may also be allowed to obtain this time in a fixed winged aircraft or a combination of helicopter and fixed wing aircraft.
Commercial Pilot Helicopter / Time Building
The Commercial Pilot Certificate requires a total time of 150 hour total flight time. (fixed wing or helicopter), which must include 100 hours in a prowered aircraft, of which 50 hours must be in a helicopter. Also, you must have 100 hours Pilot in Command (PIC) time of which 35 hours must be in a helicopter and 10 hours of that must be cross-country flight. The estimate below is based on zero time to helicopter Commercial with no fixed wing time included.
